Forgetmenot is correct. Shauna didn't go back on that decision. Instead she used aetheric technology to extend her life, so she still achieved what was essential to Oren: living far too long, to the point where she wanted to die.

I still say the key question raised by this episode is, Who is "The Herald of Oren"?

I thought that was explained as the purest essence of odi combined with his love for his mother, Sonsa, just as that combined with Shauna's love for Tyler formed her Herald.

You are correct that Shauna's herald did describe itself that way, and as long as we are sure that magical creatures never tell lies, then no other explanation is needed.
